Homemade Chex mix without nuts

Homemade Chex mix is a classic party snack. It is commonly served at Christmas time, but can be enjoyed year round. I have always loved this at gatherings. With several nut allergies in my family, I wanted to prepare a nut free homemade Chex mix. This recipe uses two types of Chex cereal, cheerios, and pretzels. The main topping is butter (can’t go wrong there!) and then a mixture of seasonings.

I tried several versions of this recipe. One was too flavorful and the spices nearly coated my mouth. The next was too bland. Finally, the perfect combination! I will say, my family did not mind at all taste testing all of these recipes. This is a wonderful snack to have on hand. My family enjoyed munching on it at home and on a short road trip we took.

Ingredients

  • Rice Chex
  • Corn Chex: Both of these Chex cereals are pretty comparable in taste. I like using two varieties to add a bit of color contrast. You could very well just use one or the other.
  • Cheerios: I used plain cheerios in this recipe. The seasoning is plenty flavorful so you don’t need flavored cheerios.
  • Mini pretzel twists: you can also use mini pretzels sticks.
  • Unsalted butter: use unsalted as the seasoning salt adds plenty.
  • Worcestershire sauce: this sauce adds hints of tang and saltiness.
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Seasoning salt: Lowry’s is a great option, but any seasoning salt will do.

Tips for success

  • There is no need to grease the baking pan or use parchment paper. The butter mixture will prevent it from sticking. This will also help the Chex mix become crispy.
  • Stir the mixture every 20 minutes to prevent burning. If your oven does not go as low as 250 degrees, then decrease the baking time and watch it closely.
