Homemade Chex mix without nuts

Homemade Chex mix is a classic party snack. It is commonly served at Christmas time, but can be enjoyed year round. I have always loved this at gatherings. With several nut allergies in my family, I wanted to prepare a nut free homemade Chex mix.

This recipe uses two types of Chex cereal, cheerios, and pretzels. The main topping is butter (can’t go wrong there!) and then a mixture of seasonings.

I tried several versions of this recipe. One was too flavorful, and the spices nearly coated my mouth. The next was too bland. Finally, the perfect combination! I will say, my family did not mind at all taste testing all of these recipes.

This is a wonderful snack to have on hand. My family enjoyed munching on it at home and on a short road trip we took.

Ingredients and substitutions

Two bowls with the ingredients for the recipe inside with text labels on top
  • Rice Chex and Corn Chex: Both of these Chex cereals are pretty comparable in taste. I like using two varieties to add a bit of color contrast. You could very well just use one or the other.
  • Cheerios: I used plain cheerios in this recipe. The seasoning is plenty flavorful, so you don’t need flavored cheerios.
  • Mini pretzel twists: you can also use mini pretzels sticks.
  • Unsalted butter: use unsalted as the seasoning salt adds plenty.
  • Worcestershire sauce: this sauce adds hints of tang and saltiness.
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Seasoning salt: Lowry’s is a great option, but any seasoning salt will do.

Tips for success

  • There is no need to grease the baking pan or use parchment paper. The butter mixture will prevent it from sticking. This will also help the Chex mix become crispy.
  • Stir the mixture every 20 minutes to prevent burning. If your oven does not go as low as 250 degrees, then set it to the lowest temperature it will go. You will need to decrease the total baking time, keeping an eye on it closely so it doesn’t burn.
