Simple Sourdough Turkey Melt

When lunch time rolls around, a lunch in less than 10 minutes is my typical goal! This very simple sourdough turkey melt has a delicious crunchy exterior filled with creamy cheese and protein. This very simple lunch is one that can be thrown together and enjoyed quickly.

Simple Sourdough Turkey Melt

On this particular winter weekend it was snowy and extremely cold outside. My husband and I began digging through the pantry and fridge to quickly throw a lunch together. The initial inspiration was a can of tomato soup, which led to throwing together this sourdough turkey melt. I had leftover sourdough bread from the day prior which truly came to life when we turned it into a sandwich with a little bit of butter. I honestly could barely capture a picture of it as little hands were grabbing at the plate yelling, “cheese!”

Ingredients

Sourdough bread – I prepare mine homemade, but they also sell it store bought or check your local farmers market

Sharp cheddar cheese

Turkey deli meat – Can easy sub for your favorite deli meat

Unsalted Butter

How to make a sourdough turkey melt

What I love about this recipe

Any sandwich is made better when toasted on a skillet. I believe the outside temperature read 10 degrees Fahrenheit on this day and this warm sandwich paired with tomato soup was quick, easy, and delicious! Prepared on homemade sourdough bread adds the extra benefit of good bacteria through the fermentation process.

FAQ

Can I cook this on a griddle or panini press? Yes! A griddle is nice because you can cook multiple sandwiches at once. I would set the heat to medium low. Panini presses vary so much. Follow the instructions for your particular panini press.

How do I know when the sandwich is done? You are looking for light brown crispy bread and melted cheese in the middle

Substitutions

Sharp cheddar cheese: Can be swapped out to pepper jack cheese, Swiss cheese, or provolone

Butter: For a dairy free option use margarine

Turkey: Ham or roast beef. Get the sliced deli meat of course!

What to pair with

Anything you have on hand! We served with Campbells tomato soup and veggies/dip. Other tasty options:

  • Fruit
  • Chips
  • Salad
  • Hummus and veggies

More Add-ins

If you want to add more to sandwich, these are great options! Simply add them in before you heat on the skillet.

  • Spinach
  • Avocado
  • Tomato
  • Bacon
  • Red onion

Storage and reheating

Store in an airtight container in the fridge. I would reheat on a skillet. You can warm it in the microwave, but the bread will get soggy. If you are taking it to lunch I would recommend just eating it cold and it still tastes SO good!
