Sourdough Turkey Sandwich (Hot, Crispy + Easy)
This sourdough turkey sandwich is the perfect sandwich! It has a delicious crunchy exterior and is filled with melted cheese, tomato, turkey, and avocado. This delicious lunch recipe is one that can be thrown together and enjoyed quickly.

On this particular winter weekend, it was snowy and extremely cold outside. My husband and I began digging through the pantry and fridge to quickly throw a lunch together. The initial inspiration was a can of tomato soup, which led to throwing together this sourdough turkey melt.

I had leftover sourdough bread from the day prior which truly came to life when we turned it into a sandwich with a little bit of butter. I honestly could barely capture a picture of it as little hands were grabbing at the plate yelling, “cheese!”
This simple sourdough turkey sandwich can be prepare with just sourdough bread, cheddar cheese, avocado, and sliced turkey deli meat. You can easily jazz it up by adding tomatoes, cucumbers, ham, or bacon. The possibilities are endless! You will love this simple lunch recipe.

Ingredients and substitutions
- Sourdough bread – I prepare mine homemade, but they also sell it store bought or check your local farmers market.
- Sharp cheddar cheese – You can either use pre-sliced cheddar cheese or shredded cheese. Colby jack and pepperjack are more great options.
- Turkey deli meat – I just pick up sliced turkey meat from our deli counter at our local grocery store. Can easy sub for your favorite deli meat.
- Avocado – A great creamy addition.
- Tomato: Or sub for cucumbers, spinach, or pickles.
- Unsalted Butter – to butter both sides of the bread. This allows them to toast to crunchy perfection.
How to make a sourdough turkey sandwich

Step one: Butter the outside of both pieces of sourdough bread. Place cheese on the inside of one slice of sourdough bread and mashed avocado on the other slice.

Step two: Layer on slices of tomato and turkey.

Step three: Toast for 2-3 minutes per side on a griddle or skillet.

Step four: Slice and enjoy!
FAQ
Yes! A griddle is nice because you can cook multiple sandwiches at once. I would set the heat to medium low. Panini presses vary so much. Follow the instructions for your particular panini press.
You are looking for light brown crispy bread and melted cheese in the middle.
I prefer to buy a block of cheddar cheese and shred it myself. The quality is better and it melts easier.

Storage and reheating
Store in an airtight container in the fridge. I would reheat on a skillet. If you warm in the microwave, the bread will get soggy. If you are taking it to lunch I would recommend just eating it cold and it still tastes SO good!

Sourdough Turkey Sandwich

Ingredients
- 8 slices sourdough bread
- 4 ounces sharp cheddar cheese shredded. Or 4 slices of cheese.
- 8 ounces turkey deli meat
- 4 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 2 avocados
- 1 large tomato
Instructions
- Spread out 8 slices of sourdough bread onto a working surface.
- Mash the avocado in a small bowl. Slice the tomato into four even slices.
- Butter 1 side of each sourdough bread with approximately 1/2 tablespoon of butter.
- Assemble 4 sandwiches with a layer of avocado, tomato, turkey and cheddar cheese. Be sure to place all ingredients on the non-buttered sides of the bread.
- Heat skillet to medium low heat and place sandwich with butter side down into skillet.
- Heat on each side 2-3 minutes until golden brown and cheese has melted.
- Slice and enjoy!
