FAQ

Is this a blueberry syrup or a compote?

Both are extremely similar. Compote is simply a fruit spread created by cooking fruit with sugar syrup. This syrup is not as thick and spreadable as compote would be. Compotes will often times have a thickener in it such as flour or cornstarch.

Can I use fresh blueberries?

Yes, absolutely. Fresh or frozen. If you use fresh, add 1-2 tablespoons of water to thin it out a bit. Frozen blueberries naturally release water when simmering and fresh won’t release as much.

What if my syrup isn’t thick enough?

Let is simmer an additional 2 minutes and then pull it off the heat. Allow for it cool for a few minutes and it will thicken more as it sits and cools.

What if my syrup is too thick?

Add 2-3 tablespoons of water until the desired thickness.

What to Serve This Over

You may be tempted to drink this by the spoonful, but it is also delicious over:

Pancakes
Homemade waffles without eggs
Oatmeal
Ice cream
Yogurt
Blueberry smoothie bowl
Biscuits
Scones

How to Store and Reheat

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for a week. You can also freeze leftovers.

Tips for Success

Keep the heat low while on the stovetop to not burn the syrup.

You can mash the blueberries using a potato masher if you want more of a pureed syrup.

Allow the syrup to thicken for about 2 minutes once you pull it off the stovetop.

This makes such a delicious pancake topping! I often don’t even add the maple syrup and let the blueberries sweeten it by themselves. Though when I do this my husband usually proceeds to add maple syrup himself lol!
