Note from Lexi: Why this Recipe Works

Ever want something homemade, but need some shortcuts? This recipe is for you! You still get the beautiful look of a homemade donut, but the dough is already packaged up for you. I also love this recipe because once the donuts are fried up, it can become a fun family activity to decorate the donuts. Let the little hands dip, drizzle, and toss on some sprinkles. Messy? Yes. Memories made? Absolutely.

How to make donuts with biscuits

8 biscuits laid out on parchment paper with a hand cutting out the center holes

Servings 8 donuts

Equipment

Large pot or dutch oven
Slotted metal spoon
cooling rack
Candy thermometer (to measure the oil temperature)

Ingredients

  • 1 package canned biscuit donuts I used Pillsbury Grands in this recipe
  • 4 cups frying oil such as canola, vegetable, or avocado

Option 1: Classic Donut Glaze

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 4 tablespoons milk
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Option 2: Chocolate Donut Glaze

  • cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 6 tablespoons milk
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Option 3: Cinnamon Sugar Topping

  • cup white granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • Open the biscuit can and gently roll each biscuit to flatten using a rolling pin. Use a small circle cutter (like a water bottle cap) to punch out the center. Combine the cut-out pieces to make donut holes if desired.
  • Heat oil in a large pot or Dutch oven to 350°F. Fry donuts for about 1 minute per side, until golden brown. Do not overcrowd the pot with biscuits while frying.
  • Remove and place on a paper towel–lined plate or cooling rack.
  • Once cooled, add your favorite topping:
  • Option 1 Classic Glaze: Mix powdered sugar, milk, vanilla, and salt in a bowl until smooth. Dip one side of each donut and place on a cooling rack to let excess drip off. Once set and dry, dip the other side for a thicker glaze. If you want a thicker glaze, repeat the process a second time.
  • Option 2 Chocolate Glaze: Mix cocoa powder, powdered sugar, milk, vanilla, and salt in a bowl until smooth. Dip donuts halfway, then top with sprinkles before the glaze sets.
  • Option 3 Cinnamon Sugar: Mix cinnamon and sugar in a bowl. Roll donuts until fully coated.

Notes

The hardest part of this recipe is ensuring the frying oil is the right temperature. Use a food thermometer to keep oil around 350 degrees Fahrenheit so the donuts do not over or undercook.
OVEN BAKING METHOD: Place biscuit donuts on a greased or parchment lined baking sheet at 375 degrees for about 10-15 minutes.
STORAGE: Store glazed donuts in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2–3 days since the glaze contains milk. To keep them at room temperature, substitute COLD water for the milk in the glaze. Cinnamon sugar donuts can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container.
