• 🐻 What Animals: Cute faces include bear, cat, owl, bird, fish, and bunny.

Silly animal toasts are perfect for a quick breakfast, lunch, or snack. They’re also a fun activity to make with your kids. For my kids, I show them the picture collage above and they pick their favorite and assemble the faces. It is a great way to get them excited about eating healthy.

While the animal options are endless, pictured above are a few of our favorites.

All of these toasts are nut-free, using sunflower butter as one of the base spreads. With tree nut allergies in our family, we need a delicious nut free option. The other base spread is avocado or cream cheese, which adds a creamy contrast to the fresh fruit. Feel free to mix and match to suit your taste or what you have on hand.

The crunch of the toast, the creaminess of the spread, and the sweetness of the fruit make for a perfect combo. It’s a fun and easy way to whip up a nutritious snack for kids.

Ingredients

Base: Bread (wheat, sourdough, or your favorite type).

Spread: Sliced avocado, cream cheese or sunflower butter.

Face components: All of these use a combination of strawberries, blueberries, and bananas.

Substitutions

Toast: Can be swapped for a rice cake, English muffins, waffle, or bagel.

Sunflower Butter: Wowbutter or biscoff cookie butter.

Cream cheese: Greek yogurt, hummus, or avocado (remember that the color will impact the look of the animal).

Note from Lexi

One of my favorite things about simple recipes like this is how easy they make it to bring kids into the kitchen. This recipe is always such a hit, and it turns into even more fun when they help make it. Teaching my kids the basics of cooking start with little things – spreading cream cheese, chopping soft fruit, and their personal favorite, pushing the toaster down. It does not have to be complicated to be meaningful. These small moments in the kitchen build confidence, skills, and sweet memories, and this is such a fun way to get your kids involved right alongside you.

FAQ

What can I use besides bread?

If you want another base, you can swap regular toast for a rice cake or waffle.

Select the ingredients based on which animal toast you are making:

  • 1 Piece of bread toasted

  • Fruit toppings blueberry, strawberry, bananas

Instructions

Bear Toast

  • Spread sunflower butter on bread. Slice a banana for the ears and nose. Place blueberries for the eyes and nose.

Bunny Toast

  • Spread cream cheese as the base. Use two long slices of bananas for the ears. Slice 6 long rectangles for whiskers. Use two small strawberries pieces for the eyes and one blueberry for the nose.

Cat Toast

  • Spread cream cheese on the bread. This one typically requires two strawberries for the following: Two triangle ears, 6 long rectangle whiskers, and a semi-circle nose. Place two blueberries for the eyes.

Fish Toast

  • Spread cream cheese on the bread. Slice small semi-circles out of a strawberry for the fish scales. I prefer to cut out about 20 small ones. Lay them on the bread and form an oval. Place a small slice of strawberry on the top for a fin and two large strawberry triangles for the tail. Use a blueberry for an eye.

Bird Toast (Parrot)

  • Use 5 slices of avocado for the feathers. Cut out a triangle from strawberries for the beak. Place a blueberry for the eye.

Owl Toast

  • Spread cream cheese on the bread. Slice two strawberries for the wings, a semi-circle or the nose. Place bananas and blueberries for the eyes.

Notes

Substitutions include:
  • Greek yogurt instead of cream cheese.
  • Wowbutter or biscoff cookie butter instead of sunflower butter. If you do not need this snack to be nut free you can use your favorite nut butter.
