The idea for these rice krispie treats came to mind as my kids have been obsessed with marshmallows recently. We have been to several bonfires recently and have roasted marshmallows. My kids end up eating as many as they can get their hands on. We had some left over so we decided to make Christmas treats with them.
There are several different festive ways to decorate rice krispie treats. You can add sprinkles or red and green m&ms. Another option is to use cookie cutters to create festive shapes (trees, stars, ornaments).
Ingredients in Christmas rice krispie treats
- Regular sized marshmallows: for the the ooey-gooey deliciousness in this recipe!
- Unsalted butter: adds creaminess
- Vanilla: adds delicious flavor
- Rice cereal: this goes by several names including rice krispie, puffed cereal, crispy rice cereal
- Christmas sprinkles: to mix in the rice krispies and to place on the top
How to make Christmas rice krispie treats
- Line a 9 x 13 baking pan with parchment paper
- In a large pot melt butter on low heat. Add in marshmallows and stir frequently until melted.
- Add in vanilla and stir
- Stir in rice cereal and 2 tablespoons of the Christmas sprinkles
- Scoop out into the baking pan. Use a silicone spatula to spread out the mixture. Try to spread it gently and not pack down the rice krispie treats.
