Homemade Applesauce: 3 Flavors
Homemade applesauce can be made with simple ingredients or jazzed up a bit with different flavors. My family made original, maple cinnamon, and pumpkin spice. All 3 of the flavors were delicious and everyone had a different personal favorite.

Different flavors of applesauce
All 3 of these flavors are perfect for fall weather. Original applesauce uses only apples, water, lemon juice and cinnamon. The taste is simple, yet flavorful. You can add a bit of honey or brown sugar if you prefer it sweeter. The next flavor is maple cinnamon. It is sweetened with maple syrup and combined with the lovely flavors of cinnamon and vanilla. The last flavor is pumpkin spice applesauce. Pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, and cinnamon are the key ingredients. Did I mention it has brown sugar? This one was my personal favorite.
Store bought vs. homemade applesauce
Store bought applesauce has been a staple snack in our house. It is a healthy snack and my kids love them. However, if you are buying the prepackaged pouches they can get expensive and as my kids get older they typically want to eat 2 of them for a snack. I have been a bit intimated to make homemade applesauce, but it was easier than I anticipated and a fun activity to do as a family. My mom brought over 30 apples to my house and we had fun choosing the different flavors to make. It was a fun family activity peeling and chopping the apples. We use these kid safe knives!
I enjoy using these simple modern reusable food pouches. I fill them with applesauce, yogurt, or smoothies.
How much time does it take to make homemade applesauce?
All 3 of these recipes take about 40-45 minutes. Keep in mind some of this time is the applesauce simmering on the stovetop. You can save time by leaving the skin on the apples (added fiber) or if you have someone else help with the peeling and chopping of the apples. This also makes a large batch of applesauce to enjoy all week long. Give it a try and you won’t be disappointed!
What type of apples to use?
Red delicious and gala apples are delicious to use! They are softer and will require less simmering time
Honey crisp, pink lady, and granny smith are another great option. They will require a few more minutes to simmer.
