Equipment

6-quart pot OR Dutch oven - or Dutch oven

Ingredients

  • 6 cups apple cider
  • 1 ½ cups orange juice
  • 1 apple
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 8 whole cloves or 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional)
  • 1 orange thinly sliced to garnish at the end

Instructions

  • Slice the apple into 4 large pieces and press the whole cloves into the apple.
  • In a 6-quart pot or Dutch oven pour in the apple cider, orange juice, cinnamon sticks, ginger, and nutmeg.
  • Place the apples with the cloves inside the pot.
  • Over medium heat bring to a simmer.
  • Reduce to medium low heat and simmer for 30 - 45 minutes.
  • Remove the apple slices with the cloves inside
  • You can garnish the large pot of wassail with thinly sliced oranges and additional cinnamon sticks. To garnish individual mugs of wassail I like to include 1 cinnamon stick and a half of a thin slice of orange

Notes

To prepare ahead of time: Allow the wassail to completely cool and store in an airtight container in the fridge. Reheat on the stovetop or in a crockpot.
To cook in the crockpot: Follow the above instructions and place all ingredients in the slow cooker. Cook on high for 2 hours or low for 4 hours. Remove the slices of apples before serving!
