Peppermint Hot Chocolate

Quick stovetop peppermint hot chocolate is the best winter treat! It is prepared on the stovetop by melting simple ingredients together. The result is a piping hot cupful of the perfect peppermint hot chocolate.

3 quart saucepan

Ingredients
 

  • 4 cups whole milk (sub for 2% or a dairy free version such as oat milk)
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 candy cane or peppermint stick crushed
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla
  • teaspoon pure peppermint extract

Instructions
 

  • In a medium saucepan mix together milk, sugar and cocoa powder.
  • Heat over medium heat until milk begins to steam.
  • Once milk is warmed through, add in chocolate chips, vanilla, peppermint extract, and crushed peppermint.
  • Continue to warm on medium heat. stirring frequently to prevent burning until chocolate chips are completely melted.
  • Ladle the hot chocolate into your favorite mugs.
  • Top with whipped cream, mini marshmallows, or additional crushed peppermint.

Notes

Delicious toppings: whipped cream, mini marshmallows, or additional crushed peppermint.
If you do not have a peppermint stick you can use an additional 1/8 teaspoon of peppermint extract instead.
To crush the peppermint candy: I typically place it in a Ziplock bag and use a meat tenderizer to crush the peppermint.
