This easy chocolate buttercream frosting is the kind of recipe you’ll come back to again and again. It’s rich, chocolatey, and perfect for cupcakes, cookies, cakes, or pretty much anything that needs a little extra sweetness. The best part? You only need a few minutes and 5 simple ingredients.
In a large bowl whip butter with a hand mixer until light and fluffy. This takes about 1 minute. Scrape down the sides of the bowl halfway through.
Pour in milk and vanilla and stir together.
Add in powdered sugar and cocoa powder.
Mix on low speed for about 1 minute until well combined.
Adjust the consistency as needed (see note below)

*Need it thicker for piping? Add 1/4 cup of powdered sugar until desired consistency. Need it thinner to spread on cookies? Add 1/2 tablespoon of milk at a time to thin it out.Need to make it ahead of time? Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Before using, let it come to room temperature and re-mix with a hand mixer.
